A Sensitive Child Cannot Handle Stories

Naomi Aldort

Dear Naomi, My son, as a toddler, would scream and never want to see the book cover ever again when I read him books that talk about anger and sadness. He is 4 now. Today, he was upset by a storyteller who was playing a jaguar wanting to eat a crab. I have sheltered him from books with negative emotions in the past. But it is getting less possible with him getting older and I start to feel unsure... Help!

Dear Parent,

It sounds like you have given your son the idea that life should be only happy, nice, and flawless all the time. I wonder if he got the message that anger and sadness should be avoided. Do you rush to make him happy any time something goes wrong? Does he hear things like, “No need to be angry, everything is find,” with a rush to fix and make things always pleasant?

It could be that you have taught him to fear these emotions in some other ways. I can explore it with you in a phone session and assist you in changing direction so your child can feel at peace with all emotions.
