Paper Mache Tutorial via The Red Thread

Last week’s Of The Hand exhibition inspired me to create and find new crafting projects, especially ones  that are kid friendly. I came across this paper mache project on The Red Thread (love her ideas!). In my house, there are certain sections of the newspaper that instantly get tossed into the recycling bin. Imagine turning next week’s  classifieds section into a gorgeous new work of art! Again, this why I love love love working with paper…what is old can become new and beautiful again and again and again!

Click here to see the full tutorial at The Red Thread. I would take this project up a notch by embellishing the paper with some natural elements, such as some fresh pressed flowers.

While browsing this internet on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I was delighted to find this D-I-Y dupioni silk yo-yo project by Posh Paperie and Jackie Wonders photography on Style-Me-Pretty blog.  These elegant yo-yos would make a fabulous gift topper. The simple rouching method would work well with a variety of fabrics. I’m going to dig through my donation bin at home and see what old linens I can dig up to make some yo-yos of my own!

Finish Lines and Smiles of Joy

Super Kid Award by Tulip Girls, Available on Etsy.com

My son Dag ran his first 10K yesterday! Watching him cross the finish line was such a proud moment for me. It really seems like yesterday that he was just learning how to crawl. The memory is still so vivid. It blows my mind to see that at such a young age he has taken to the wind and is on his way to becoming a young athlete.

Our kids do amazing things every single day. Whether learning new things or just doing their chores without having to be reminded; these little victories are to be celebrated, cherished, and even bragged about! What has your amazing kid done lately that has brought that smile of pride to your face?

Tiny Blooms, Big Impact

April 6th, 2010

Ahh Spring! I love this photo by Katie Helmer that I found on Creature Comforts blog. These tiny blooms are just bursting with color.  If you take a closer look you’ll notice that not one blossom is the same, but rather perfectly different. They would make a great gift topper.

Take look around for some Spring blooms of your own. Tie them together with some twine or waxed string, and voila! In no time you’ll have a fresh and fanciful gift topper of your own!

Happy Spring!

I had the most delightful trip to the farmer’s market yesterday morning. Every stall was bursting with color, especially the flower vendors. The first day of Spring brought such beautiful blooms along with it!

Naturally, the gorgeous blossoms made me think of a peony gift topper that I thought up for my book, The Art of Gift Wrapping (out April 6th!!). A sumptuous flower bouquet gift topper is always a delight to receive, as it transitions from gift to vase with ease. What beautiful blossom would you like to top your next gift with?

Crates

Crate Installation by Moda Botanica

It is amazing what you can create with repurposed materials and a bit ofimagination! MODA botanica put together five storage crates, graffiti included, and filled the otherwise listless urban rectangles with soft and lovely florals and succulents. The mix of rusty metal with lush flowers was just perfect…and won them Best in Show at the Philadelphia Flower Show this past weekend!
