Sweet Pillows and Gifts hand sewn in Miss Shannon's Sewing Class
Sweet pillows and gifts hand sewn in Miss Shannon’s Sewing Class

How sweet are these hand sewn felt pillows?! My very dear and talented friend Shannon teaches children’s sewing classes in North Hollywood, CA. She has the greatest philosophy about her craft and teaching sewing to children. Despite being surrounded by high-tech toys, the Internet, and TV, kids still haven’t lost their desire to create with their hands.

In Miss Shannon’s Sewing Classes, Shannon teaches 4 stitches, how to sew on a button, and how to make a pattern with tracing carbon paper. The kids learn how to be self reliant by making their own patterns. Additionally, they learn how to mend clothing, embellish tank tops and jeans, sew tooth fairy pillows, stitch hankies, make pillows and pillow cases, tea towels, dolls, sachets…the possibilities are endless in Miss Shannon’s Sewing Classes!

Shannon says that another amazing thing about teaching sewing is sitting together as a class in the sacred sewing circle. Shannon says, “We sit around with our work in our hands, and the children talk…I hear the most precious things…secrets from the circle. Sewing calms the children, but also opens up their minds…they begin to see things differently…how things are assembled. I also encourage them that there are no mistakes and that perfection doesn’t exist…sometimes it’s the seeming mishap that makes their project beautiful. They’re all little folk artists.”

Winter flower in bloom

Just wanted to share this gorgeous photo that my friend Elizabeth Hubbell of Elizabeth Hubbell Studio sent me. While outside on the grayest winter day, she came across this beautiful tree blossom bursting with life. Nature always has a way of surprising the quiet observer. Go take a walk outside, listen, and look. You’ll be amazed by what you find.

Resolving for a Gorgeous and Green Year of Events – And how you can too!

January 6th, 2010

Happy New Year! Despite having just made it through one of the busiest seasons for my business, I feel calm, energized, and ready to take this year by storm…Doing what you love in business and in life definitely has it’s perks! Thank goodness for that energy, because preparing for the busy wedding season starts NOW. It’s back to business and working towards my resolution to have a more mindful and green 2010.

Resolutions are great to have, but just clutter the mind if your intent and motivation to act on them is missing. So I’m working towards mine by taking the first actionable step of making this year’s “A Soolip Wedding,”a modern bridal event showcasing Los Angeles’ most creative and inspirational wedding resources, more eco-friendly than ever before. My goal is show high-end, high-fashion brides how truly gorgeous it can be to go green on the big day.

Here are some of my favorite tips about how you can easily make your next event more eco-friendly. If you’ve already started calendaring the events you’ll be hosting for the year, I encourage you to consider the tips below:

  • See the beauty in nature’s offerings such as twigs, shells, mosses, and stones. By featuring them as floral decor, you are celebrating beauty in all things made simple. You will inspire your guests to do the same in the decor of their own spaces.
  • For invitations, use recycled or tree-free papers such as those made of cotton, linen, bamboo, and hemp.
  • Whenever  possible, buy local and organic food and beverages for your menu. Always investigate a donation plan for any excess food and beverage. There are many organizations that will pick up food donations and deliver it to those who most need it.

And if you’re interested in learning about all the fabulous vendors and designers we have lined up this year, click here to read our latest press release. A Soolip Wedding will take place Sunday, February 21st at the Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles. If you’re planning a wedding this year, you won’t want to miss it!

The Thankful Tree

Portland Japanese Garden, Portland, OR by ahp_ibanez

While I try to take a minute each day to count my blessings, the hustle and bustle of life as a mother of three can all too easily put self-reflection on the back burner. That’s one of the many reasons why I love Thanksgiving. This holiday brings a special opportunity for me to express gratitude to others and teach my kids of the importance of being thankful as well. Whenever possible, I try to make learning an engaging and fun experience for my kids. And so, an easy, nature-inspired project comes to mind when I think of showing appreciation. I like to call it the thankful tree.

While hiking in Oregon this past weekend with my kids, we hunted for fall leaves and a beautiful, unique branch to serve as our thankful tree. Hunting for the most unique branch we could find was half the fun! Back at home, I gathered leftover cardstock, twine and waxed cord that I had laying around. Using our fall leaves, we traced and cut unique leaf shapes out of the paper. On each leaf, I had my kids write one thing that they were grateful for. Their answers both surprised and delighted me! Using a hole-punch, we punched holes in each of our “thankful” leaves. With colorful waxed ribbon and twine, we attached each leaf to the boughs of the branch. I also added the fall leaves we collected for a burst of vibrant fall colors.

Once finished, I place our decorative display on a tabletop by my front door entryway. Not only is our thankful tree beautiful enough to show off to the guests that I’ll be having over for during the holidays, but now each time we come and go, we are reminded of the bounty of blessings in our lives.
