Live in Country or Save for College?

Naomi Aldort

You have such wisdom about parenting & life, that I thought I would ask you this question. We have a large sum of money.  We would like to move from the city to the country because we both feel that would be best for our children, but this would deplete the funds. We were going to use this money toward our children's future education (college) if they choose to go. We are unschoolers, and our 3 children are under the age of 7.  We have heard that not all unschoolers choose to go to college.  What is your suggestion in a matter like this?

Dear parent,

It is impossible to know where your children would need to be as they grow older. You don’t say which city you live in and how much nature is available for the children at your current house. Your children may or may not go to college, but either way they may get interested in pursuing costly paths like music, sports or art. They may benefit from living in the country till adulthood, or, they may need the city at a young age.

Our own college size costs started when our children were six, nine, and thirteen. We were in the country and ended up going into great debts in order to provide what the children needed, and, they needed the city.

With such young children, you cannot go wrong living in the country, but if you want to support their autonomous directions, keep your options open.

Warmly, Naomi Aldort, http://authenticparent.com/index.html
