Beyond

Tonight your daughter must sleep
near an open window. Let her
feel the darkness moving her toward day.
She will learn to dream, then wake
To what she did not see before.

Let her wake near an open door.
She will discover that something
waits beyond and learn
to wonder, then wander
where she has never been.

And she must wander
from the strong voice of her father
the strong eyes of her mother
so that she will dream a dream
with strong legs that are not afraid

Of night or the next room.
Let this dream take her
beyond windows and doors.
She will keep her heart open.
She will find you everywhere.
