Naomi, I have heard you mention a primal diet but I don't know what this is. Can you explain this type of diet and why it is healthier. We are not vegetarian but we do choose organic and local organic when we can. But I would like to hear what you have to say. Also, you mention wheat addiction and I don't know what that is. Chrissy
Dear parent,
The primal diet is eating all raw food, like the hunters and gatherers but raw. It is not vegetarian. I have seen amazing health benefits in children and adults (including behavior and emotions) through eating without heating. The first reaction of fear of bacteria is common. However, the danger of bacteria has been scientifically disproved. Indeed, it is eating sterile and dead food that is the cause of harm to our health.
Eating raw is also less work, fewer dishes and much less to clean. We then have more time to be with the children while offering them living foods.
My personal approach to food is to listen to the body after you clean it up from habits and addictions. The healthy body knows how to choose from real foods. I consider real foods what can be eaten in its original natural form, unprocessed. For example, bread does not grow on trees, neither are noodles or breakfast cereal.
Wheat is impossible to eat unless heavily processed. It is not food nature provides for humans. Food addictions (not just wheat) are the result of eating modern man made foods. When you eat real food, you never feel that you must have it and cannot do without it. You also don’t over eat. The food is satisfying but not addictive. Processed foods seem to make us eat more than our fill.
I am not qualified to give dietary advice, but if you notice how ill our society is, you know that much of what we eat, even when organic, isn’t really food for humans. Not only food, but what we put on our skin, hair and teeth are strange concoctions instead of using what nature provides. Our super markets look like isles of boxes, plastic containers and jars; a far cry from what nature provides.
There are many wonderful raw food diet books. The primal diet book is: Recipe for Living Without Disease. It has an introduction that explains the benefits of the diet, food combining, and foods for babies and children. You can order it on Amazon.
