My Child Wants Only Me

Naomi Aldort

Dear Naomi, my child, 4 years old, does not accept to be looked after by ANYBODY else but myself. This has been so almost all of his life. I feel absolutely burnt out. Although I know you say homeschooling is best, I would like to know what alternative school model you give preference to: Montessori, or Waldorf? Nothing else is available where we live (like Democratic Schools, etc.). Thanks!

Dear Parent,

Your child is obviously well attached, and is also the type who thrives on one-on-one closeness. Sending this particular child to any school, no matter how good, is likely to cause needless trauma and harm. Going against his need can only increase his anxiety and dependency in the long run.

I cannot in honesty recommend any school for your child, as he is telling you that what is best for him is to be with you. In addition, which school is best is not a matter of method but of who the particular teacher is, and that I cannot know.

What I most recommend is that you book yourself a phone session with me so I can help you to find a different solution. I can assist you in figuring out if you have been causing your child’s dependency on you alone, and if not, in finding kind ways to give yourself a break, not at your child’s expanse. I would love to assist you.

Warmly,  Naomi Aldort,  www.AuthenticParent.com
