My son is 5, and we are home schooling. He loves to hear me read books aloud. He has taught himself to write his name and sometimes writes full pages of various letters he has written. Do you recommend "teaching" reading or waiting until children ask to learn or figure it out for themselves? What did you do with your children, and at what age did they learn to read (out of curiosity!) Thanks in advance, Anastasia Walsh
Dear parent,
It is best to let children run their own learning paths. Expose but don’t impose. Please read my article, “The Case Against Teaching.” It can be found in the book, Life Learning by Wendy Prisnitz, which is a compilation of articles from Life Learning Magazine. Or, your can read it on line here: http://www.lifelearningmagazine.com/0706/ask_naomi_aldort_the_case_against_teaching.htm
Learning anything is its own personal process. The invention of a personal learning method is by far more important than what is being learned. In addition, learning to read later has many advantages; the child has more years to sharpen his memory when not relaying on the written word, and he has time to imagine and perceive through other senses. Your son may learn to read now, or he may stay with the writing he has done so far and let it be for a couple of years. If you offer anything, it can only thwart the plan that is most optimal to his way of learning.
Warmly, http://authenticparent.com/index.html
