sprucing-up

Our Mothering.com team is made up of folks who live around the globe.* And they’re coming to visit us here at the Mothership. . . tomorrow.

So we’ve spent some time today sprucing up around the office—and for those of us in the Production Department, that has meant straightening up, cleaning out, throwing out, and doing things we’ve been meaning to do a long time, like hanging up that white board—the one that we rely on to know what day it is. . .

Tonight, as Mel and I were finishing up, about to head out the door, we realized again how blank our cinderblock walls are. (Our part of the office is in what once was a furniture warehouse.) The quick fix? Double-stick tape and large printouts of color swatches from the palette we use for the magazine. We’re thinking we might be onto something.

#

*Seriously: our web master (though we prefer the term web mama), Cynthia Mosher, lives in Saudi Arabia.

palette-wallsPhoto below kind of gives the gist of the paletted walls. (And, yes, the white board really does say “Today is Lazy Day and Healthy Cheetos Day.” It was one of those doubly exciting days.)

PANIC!

panic-day

#

According to Mel’s possibly-nonexistent-but-who-cares-because-it’s-great-entertainment Daily Calendar of Interesting Days, today is Panic Day, a day on which, I”m told, everything is worth making a fuss over, and everyone speaks loudly and urgently, in all caps and with a lot of exclamation points.

Which was a huge relief for me, having just last night ACCIDENTALLY KILLED MY LAPTOP!!!!

NOOOOO! UNDO, UNDO, UNDO!!

It was nice to know that not only was I allowed to panic, I was encouraged to do so—and had good company in the panicking. Mel and Melissa were admirably  supportive, launching into histrionics as I told my woeful tale of getting up off the couch (NO, not the COUCH!) and tripping on the cord (ANYTHING but THAT!!) and pulling the laptop onto the hard floor (THE FLOOR! OMG!). Needless to say, we laughed a lot throughout the day, which went a long way toward helping me deal with the loss of my five-year-old electronic sidekick.

And meanwhile, Associate Publisher Lally O’Mara McMahon restored my will to live by ordering a new trip-proof Mac for me.

OMG! OMG!! A NEW COMPUTER!! I CAN’T STAND IT!!!

grouse?

The Dry Erase Board.
This weekend, Tim and I made our first parental college visit to New Mexico State to see Reeve perform in a night of opera scenes. We stayed with Reeve and his good friend and roommate, Evan, at their apartment.* I was thrilled to see on display in their living room this delightful yet efficient organizing system.

Was particularly pleased to see that while the grocery list was still blank, these boys were not without an animal of the day. Priorities in place.

In all seriousness, it was thrilling (and a real mind-bender to try to imagine the Laura and Tim of 20 years ago experiencing this) to get a glimpse of Reeve’s life, his space, the choices he’s making for himself. . .  Talk about miracles! (Sending out big high-fives to the us of 1989. . .)
