Then a miracle occurs . . .

gone fishin’

crunch-time-clutter

Not! But in casting about for a metaphor to explain such abject blog neglect on my part, it’s the one that surfaces. We’re in magazine throes* now, hurtling down that final week toward the on-press date. . .

And meanwhile it’s summertime back at the ranch, where, over the last few weeks, my brother came visit (first time in 15 years!), Tim and Reeve and I helped friends move, our 13-year-old cat tried to die (spent several days at the vet but seems to be hanging in there on his own now), Reeve had to find (and did!) a place to live in the fall in Las Cruces, where he’s heading back to school. Lots going on.

So, no fish. Except for the undaunted little guy taped to my monitor.

And apologies for the blog silence.

Easy-to-follow toner-replacement instructions from the Xerox printer people. . . providing some much needed levity during production craziness. . .

When Mel rides her bike in to work . . .

How many people do you know who bike
around with their knitting? Excellent stress-reducer during these hazy, crazy days of magazine production.

Oh, and also in the basket? Her towel . . . (Happy Towel Day!)

that miracle

December 4th, 2009

production-aidsWoo-hoo! We just put Jan-Feb to bed, as they say in old-school printing vernacular.

Each time we get another issue of the magazine out, it seems like a miracle. And this issue (my 35th!) was no exception.

Today, however, Mel and I were helped along by production angel/ managing editor Melissa Chianta‘s inspired takeout gifts of caffeine and chocolate from The Chocolate Maven.

back in the fray

November 13th, 2009

signsWe’re once again in the midst of production, a nebulous term which includes copyediting, fact checking, photo shooting/image acquisition, page layout, photo optimization, page proofing, finger crossing, and an office drawer full of chocolate.

production aid #17

on the ballThe ball. This is where I sit, and it does wonders for my mood—as well as my hamstrings. Rolling around on an inflated ball all day, it’s hard not to feel like a kid.

Now, if I can just find a few other folks with feet as big as mine, we might be able to get up a big game of kickball. . .
