Then a miracle occurs . . .

footnotes to October

November 11th, 2010

feetOctober was a rich month for me: the exciting and profound experience of traveling with Peggy, a lovely week with my parents in the land of my birth, an impromptu trip with my Tim to go visit College Boy Reeve in southern NM (then road-tripping with Reeve and his girlfriend for a couple of days.)

I didn’t get around to blogging much during October, but now that I’ve left it behind, a few blog-appropriate reflections have surfaced:

running-footFor optimal sense of adventure and  exhilaration of discovery: predawn runs with a camera are highly recommended when one is visiting a new place—whether it’s the city sidewalks and pavement of Los Angeles (it was) or the quiet rural roads of  southeastern North Carolina (which also was. Though since I ran with my dad, talking philosophy and solving the world’s problems as we ate up the miles, the roads were not so quiet).

small-lakeFor connection to one’s roots and a revitalization of the body’s sense memory: when you have the opportunity, be sure to swim (er, stand? Water was way low this year.) in the lake where you were born, even though the temperature might be a little more invigorating than you remember it being when you were young.

small-napIbid. Take at least one nap in the very same bed you slept in as a child. (While resting, sneakily snap a photo with your phone to send from bed to your sister in Ohio, whose matching twin bed is right next to you and who you really wish were napping in it right now.)

small-beachFor future fortification: No one should be expected to deal with the impending onset of winter in the mountains without first having had the chance to dig her toes into the still warm sand of a North Carolina beach in October. (This particular beach is Ocean Isle, these particular feet having just run in the 30th annual Oyster Festival 10K run with those of her father, laughing and chatting—us, not the feet—all the way.)

small-travelFor a sense of belonging: Lie in the sun and thaw out with your beloved fellow travelers after a few hours spent deep within the earth, exploring the 56-degrees-year-round Carlsbad Caverns—all sprawled out on picnic tables overlooking a desert plateau, before heading to the mouth of the cave at sunset to watch hundreds of thousands of bats head out into the evening.

P.S. OK,  goofy concept, I admit—but what else does one do with so many photographs from all over the country of one’s feet?

honoring midwives . . . and Peggy!

November 2nd, 2010

carrie-anne-moss-presents-awardhugblessing-of-handscircle-of-midwives

Last month Peggy (Mothering editor and publisher Peggy O’Mara) and I were in Los Angeles for the ICTC Black Midwives and Healers Conference. While in the area, we also took part in another midwifery-related event a short drive away: a gathering at Golden Bridge Yoga Studio in Hollywood to honor local midwives for National Midwifery Week.

Peggy had been invited to speak but didn’t really know much about the event, only that she had been asked to give a brief talk about midwifery. As it turned out, Peggy was invited there not just to speak—but to receive an award for her efforts over the last 30 years on behalf of midwives around the world! It was a lovely surprise.

Birth advocate and talk show host Ricki Lake (cover girl for our January-February 2008 issue), who also participated in the event, blogged about it here this week. (Ricki’s documentary, The Business of Being Born, has rapidly made its way into the canon of must-see birth films of the 21st century.)

Also honored was Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA), sponsor of the revolutionary Maximizing Optimal Maternity Services for the 21st Century Act.

Another familiar face in the crowd was a longtime Mothering contributor, pediatrician Jay Gordon (who happens to have a piece coming up in our Jan-Feb issue).

A new friend of ours was there, as well: birth photographer Anna Verwaal, whom we had just met the week before in Santa Fe, when she stopped by the Mothering office to show the staff her work. Anna was at Golden Bridge to present a slide show of some of her photos of midwives in action—a very moving presentation that left many in need of a hankie. A maternal child health nurse, certified lactation educator, and doula as well as photographer, Anna has combined these roles  to create profound images that capture the emotion of the birth experience. You can see some of her photos here.

scenes from a conference, part 3

October 14th, 2010

More photos from the 7th International Black Midwives and Healers Conference in Long Beach, California, which I attended last weekend with Mothering publisher and editor Peggy O’Mara (see her latest reflections on the conference here).

The view from my sixth-floor room at the conference (it was held at the Long Beach Hilton). It felt very NOT Santa Fe. . .

and now for something completely different

October 8th, 2010

palm-tree-sunsetNo,rental-car you’re right. That doesn’t look like Santa Fe. And right now this doesn’t look like my usual day-to-day life. Peggy (Mothering Editor and Publisher Peggy O’Mara) and I just got in to Los Angeles— after an adventure-packed day of travel and good company—to attend the 7th International Black Midwives and Healers Conference.

I’ll be trying to blog, though I still don’t have my beloved laptop back. (I’m using a hand-cranked PowerBook from the Victorian era, on loan from our Mac guy) (I joke, but I’m very grateful. It’s an extra computer he just happened to have on hand, and it’s way better than not having one at all.)  It’s been a struggle to keep Safari from crashing, but I might be able to make this work. . . Stay tuned.

Photos of the last of the light in Long Beach, which we caught from the Budget rental car parking lot, where in trying the Fast Break option, we were unnerved to learn that we could have our pick of the  cars in our designated area. Four or five cars, each with a set of keys on the dash. Hard not to feel like we were doing something illegal, as we picked one out, tossed our luggage in the back, hopped in, and drove away. . .

here we go again. . .

September 2nd, 2010

houseIt’s toy time at the Mothering house! Product Review Editor Candace Walsh‘s desk has been a little like the receiving office at the North Pole, snowed under by boxes and boxes of toys, many of which have had to be assembled.

In years past, this task has fallen to Mothering‘s circulation director, John “You Da Man”* McMahon. Since John was out of town last week (traveling with his son Ian, who is starting college at Duke this fall), Bram McMahon has kindly stepped in to help. (Bram is John’s—and Mothering Editor and Publisher Peggy O’Mara‘s—younger son.)

So our staff photographer, Melyssa Holik, is starting to get all a’tingle with anticipation. Despite the fact that she has to shoot what seems like hundreds of toys, I’ve noticed that she seems to enjoy this project. (I’ve also noticed how much “arranging” and “setting up” sure can look like “playing with” . . .)

Regular readers of the magazine will know that all this buzz and hubbub is in preparation for our annual natural toy review (which appears in our November–December issue each year). And it’s a team effort: the UPS guy delivers the toys; Bram assembles them; Candace looks them over, reads up on them, plays with them, and writes about them; then Mel photographs them, gets text from Candace, and lays out the reviews.

It may only just now be September—and still almost 90 degrees out—but it’s beginning to look a bit like . . . well, you know!

*Since he is, actually, da only man in the Mothering offices these days.

UPScandace-and-boxesBramPhotos, from top: 1) my favorite so far of the toys Bram has put together (dolls artfully arranged by Bram); 2) the UPS guy makes a delivery at Candace’s desk; 3) Candace at her desk, last week, surrounded by boxes; 4) Bram, stopping by several afternoons this week to do assembly, thereby proving that he got his dad’s toy-building genes, for sure.

team-grape2

. . . was, um, in full force Friday afternoon for The Sometime Annual Peggy-O’Mara’s-Post-Birthday Photo Scavenger Hunt, as evidenced here by this shot of Team Grape as they posed for a team portrait while trying to psyche out the competition, Team Birdbath. (Team names and colors came from the color palette we use for the magazine)

and I thought we had fun in the production department!

February 23rd, 2010

lallyWeekly Circulation meeting today. I don’t usually attend these, but since we’re discussing where we want to go with digital media, I sat in, joining Circulation Director John McMahon, Associate Publisher Lally O’Mara McMahon, Marketing Director Elizabeth Carovillano, and Publisher/Editor Peggy O’Mara.

This group does know how to take a fairly dry subject (i.e., numbers, numbers, numbers) and make it interesting, even entertaining—with lots getting accomplished in the midst of the laughter.

Couldn’t resist grabbing this cell phone photo of our esteemed associate publisher (who’s been having trouble with her back), doing some of her mandatory back exercises while discussing the status of product sales at the Mothering shop.

that voice in my head

May 20th, 2009

You know how there’s this voice in your head that sometimes says things like “GO back into the house right now and put on a slip!” or “SMILE at the grouchy waiter—he’s having a bad day”. . .? That voice of instruction/barometer of appropriateness, your own internal dialogue of “thou shalts” . . . your mom’s voice?*

Well, I hear the mom voice, too, of course. Who doesn’t? But when it comes to design, I hear an altogether different voice: that of Robin Williams. (Yes, THE Robin Williams,** and, no, not the actor!)

mermaidI had the good fortune to take a class on typography from Robin in 1997 and have not been the same since. (For lots of reasons, which I’d love to talk about, including the fact that she’s now a very dear friend, but because I’m under deadline and not really supposed to be doing anything but layout, I’ll have to elaborate later.)

One of Robin’s better known maxims regarding design—one that has appeared in her design books—is “Don’t be a wimp.” I hear that one quite often.

But the phrase I hear at least once a day is something Robin said repeatedly in class: “Trust your eyes . . . . You know what you’re doing. Just look!” Many, many times over the past 12 years, that reassuring call to be present and trust myself has helped me over a creative hurdle and on to the next challenge.

OK. As Robin often says, “Anon!” Back to layout!

More about Robin later. . .

#

*We included one of Mothering publisher and editor-in-chief Peggy O’Mara’s bits of wisdom along these lines in our 2009 calendar: “The way we talk to our children becomes the inner voice they hear.” (Kind of makes you think twice, doesn’t it?)

**Macintosh computer users around the world practically worship Robin for her witty, easy-to-understand tomes on all things Mac, but she’s also written brilliant books on design, typography, font management, podcasting, web design, and . . . and an in-depth look at a surprising candidate for the authorship of the works of William Shakespeare.

Image scanned from one of Robin’s 50+ books, Beyond the Mac Is Not a Typewriter (1996). Part of what I love about Robin’s books—besides the fun, sassy tone—is the wackiness of the examples she uses. Who knew learning could be such silly fun?

mama-to-be Simone

May 4th, 2009

Mothering staffers gathered yesterday for a baby shower for Simone Snyder (who among other crucial things manages ad traffic for us), due in a couple of weeks.

We’ll be posting a slide show of the shower on Mothering.com soon, but in the meantime, that’s us in Marketing Director Elizabeth Carovillano’s back yard.

Left to right, back row: Jennifer Bartlit, Lally McMahon, Simone Snyder, Peggy O’Mara, Kristina Morris-Heredia. Kneeling: Elizabeth Carovillano, Melyssa Holik, me.
