Then a miracle occurs . . .

A friendly reminder

August 28th, 2011

…to hang on to at least some of the many thousands of drawings and paintings your child will make over the next few years. Right now it might seem like the artwork is no big deal, there’s so much of it—but I’m over here in your future, telling you that these drawings will become real treasures for you down the road!

And a tip: After a drawing is finished, ask your child to tell you what’s happening in the picture and write it on the artwork itself. Then date it. And put it somewhere safe (after some time on the fridge, of course!).

Above: A drawing 5-year-old Reeve made of a chimneysweep (I’m guessing we had recently had our chimney cleaned? or had just seen Mary Poppins?) on top of Megutasaurus, a fictional Godzilla-type monster he made up based on a toy dinosaur he had gotten at the New Mexico Natural History Museum. There’s no way I would have remembered any of this if Tim hadn’t written it down.

textured whimsy

November 20th, 2009

the-brave-little-girlI’ve been admiring the work of Suzanne Summersgill at Pinn Studio for years and am thrilled to finally have a chance to work with her. (She’s doing an illustration for our upcoming Jan-Feb issue.)

Here’s a piece from her website, “The Brave Little Girl.” I love that combination of built textures and whimsy!

Check out more of her work here.

behind the scenes @ issue 156, part 2

September 15th, 2009

Best bits from our September–October issue.

home-aloneMel, Unplugged

Melyssa Holik, my delightful and multi-talented coworker and right-hand woman, has worked at Mothering for almost two years now. I knew, of course, about her skills in photography, design, writing, print and web production, even her aptitude for foreign languages like Russian. And I knew about her prowess in InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator. . .

But until I needed an image AND needed to stay under budget (“Hey, Mel, want to take a stab at this?”), I didn’t realize that she also is a very capable illustrator.  Not as in the software; as in tactile, physical, material, tangible. As in step away from the computer and use your hands.

I told her I wanted: “Horizontal orientation, huge starry sky, crisp February night, man below looking up at stars, his back to the house, cozy house with lights on in right lower corner. Magical feel, quiet, miracle about to happen. . .” And look what I got!

Check it out in our September–October issue.
