sprucing-up

Our Mothering.com team is made up of folks who live around the globe.* And they’re coming to visit us here at the Mothership. . . tomorrow.

So we’ve spent some time today sprucing up around the office—and for those of us in the Production Department, that has meant straightening up, cleaning out, throwing out, and doing things we’ve been meaning to do a long time, like hanging up that white board—the one that we rely on to know what day it is. . .

Tonight, as Mel and I were finishing up, about to head out the door, we realized again how blank our cinderblock walls are. (Our part of the office is in what once was a furniture warehouse.) The quick fix? Double-stick tape and large printouts of color swatches from the palette we use for the magazine. We’re thinking we might be onto something.

#

*Seriously: our web master (though we prefer the term web mama), Cynthia Mosher, lives in Saudi Arabia.

palette-wallsPhoto below kind of gives the gist of the paletted walls. (And, yes, the white board really does say “Today is Lazy Day and Healthy Cheetos Day.” It was one of those doubly exciting days.)

gone fishin’

July 29th, 2010

crunch-time-clutter

Not! But in casting about for a metaphor to explain such abject blog neglect on my part, it’s the one that surfaces. We’re in magazine throes* now, hurtling down that final week toward the on-press date. . .

And meanwhile it’s summertime back at the ranch, where, over the last few weeks, my brother came visit (first time in 15 years!), Tim and Reeve and I helped friends move, our 13-year-old cat tried to die (spent several days at the vet but seems to be hanging in there on his own now), Reeve had to find (and did!) a place to live in the fall in Las Cruces, where he’s heading back to school. Lots going on.

So, no fish. Except for the undaunted little guy taped to my monitor.

And apologies for the blog silence.

how to make a magazine

May 24th, 2010

front-porch fun with chalkWell, sort of. Mel and Lally and I got a little sidetracked when we discovered this deliciously colorful chalk still hidden deep in the recesses of the trophy (on display in the community kitchen area) awarded in Friday’s scavenger hunt.

So the three of us grabbed the chalk and went to town, as they say, on the front steps of our office, everyone else having already left the office for the day. Squatting over our artwork like little kids, scribbling and scrawling in the almost-summer evening air. . .

Sometimes the path to creating a magazine is a winding one.

team-grape2

. . . was, um, in full force Friday afternoon for The Sometime Annual Peggy-O’Mara’s-Post-Birthday Photo Scavenger Hunt, as evidenced here by this shot of Team Grape as they posed for a team portrait while trying to psyche out the competition, Team Birdbath. (Team names and colors came from the color palette we use for the magazine)

Photos from the fun: escalatorand-they're-off

Above: Team Grape’s fighting crew of three included Fulfillment Manager Sarah Patamia, Publisher/ Editor Peggy O’Mara, Associate Publisher Lally O’Mara McMahon

Far right: John McMahon, Melyssa Holik and Shirl Ervin of Team Birdbath point illustratively to the only escalator (currently disabled) in downtown Santa Fe.

Above: And they’re off! Melyssa Holik and Simone Snyder reading the next assignment dash away on their latest assignment.

Sarah and Peggy catch their breath and rapidly read their next assignment while Lally calls tries to reach a possible fourth teammate.

the kind of week it’s been

March 23rd, 2010

maninchair

And it’s only Tuesday.

In other words, kinda crazy around here.

In addition to our regularly scheduled production work on the May–June issue of the magazine, we’ve been in various stages of birthing Mothering Radio, an audio version of the mag, a mobile version of the web site, Mothering-topic-related phone apps, several new reprints of time-honored favorite articles, and more.

But it’s all good. Exciting times to be working here. Just gotta strap ourselves in for the ride . . .

Photo by Steve Steigman. You might be too young to remember Maxell’s “Chair Man” ad campaign, but this image was everywhere in the late 1970s and early 1980s. (The story behind the ad, created by the old Scali, McCabe, Sloves agency, is here.) Apparently, the “blow away guy” was brought back in 2005, this time to the world of online games. That story (along with some of the photographer’s tricks for achieving that “blown-away look” look), here.

and I thought we had fun in the production department!

February 23rd, 2010

lallyWeekly Circulation meeting today. I don’t usually attend these, but since we’re discussing where we want to go with digital media, I sat in, joining Circulation Director John McMahon, Associate Publisher Lally O’Mara McMahon, Marketing Director Elizabeth Carovillano, and Publisher/Editor Peggy O’Mara.

This group does know how to take a fairly dry subject (i.e., numbers, numbers, numbers) and make it interesting, even entertaining—with lots getting accomplished in the midst of the laughter.

Couldn’t resist grabbing this cell phone photo of our esteemed associate publisher (who’s been having trouble with her back), doing some of her mandatory back exercises while discussing the status of product sales at the Mothering shop.

when the going gets tough, the tough . . .

January 24th, 2010

.  .. sometimes, occasionally, in search of a surge of focus, might possibly try some off-brand so-called “energy” drink because the name sounds like what the tough might need.

Possibly.

go-fast

PS Take my word for it: you can skip this one. TERRIBLE. (Though the can sort of yells at you from the sidelines in a way that’s almost inspiring.)

in case you missed the memo

January 19th, 2010

popcornbackyardToday is Popcorn Day.*

It is also, around these parts, a snow day.

Which makes it very, very difficult to focus on the tasks at hand (i.e. the March–April issue of the magazine, should, say, we might want to have one this year). Gulp.

#
#

*This, according to Mel’s very entertaining calendar, which none of the rest of us in the office have seen and might doubt the existence of except that it makes work much more fun if we believe.
