Then a miracle occurs . . .

exhilaration (and anticlimax)

December 7th, 2010

ta-daTa-da! We are done, finished, through. Jan-Feb issue 164 is outta here!

After the frenzy of layouts and proofing and file-sending, late nights and long hours, Managing Editor Melissa Chianta just signed off on the last page—which is a huge relief, and, as always, pretty much a source of wonder.

But it’s also anticlimactic. Since after a day or two to catch our breath (And after, that is, we also finish up the digital version of the magazine, adding links and digital bonus material), the whole process starts all over again. . .

Still, it feels good to have put this one to bed. High fives all ’round!

phantom limbo

October 3rd, 2010

pantry-ghostsI keep forgetting that my laptop—the MacBook Pro I got just last March, the one which abruptly stopped being able to recognize its own hard drive two weeks ago—is not here. I keep thinking—usually late at night or early in the morning—that I’ll work on a layout or blog post or will email somebody or download photos,* only to reach for the laptop, and . . .

I had not realized how much a part of my daily life that laptop normally is—my portal to the outside world. So I’m feeling alternately crippled (delegated to the world of IRL) and tied to the office (i.e. The kinds of things I normally am able to do when unable to sleep have to wait until I’m able to walk or run or drive to the office.).

I’m trying to be patient. The laptop is in Apple Fixit Land and is due to be back sometime this week. We hope.

*Both my camera-download cable and the card reader I bought to replace it have also stopped working, too,** so I’ve been using the laptop’s built-in card reader to download photos. Until now, at which point I find myself using the iPhone camera more than I used to.

**You could say I tend to, um, “push equipment to the max.”

PANIC!

panic-day

#

According to Mel’s possibly-nonexistent-but-who-cares-because-it’s-great-entertainment Daily Calendar of Interesting Days, today is Panic Day, a day on which, I”m told, everything is worth making a fuss over, and everyone speaks loudly and urgently, in all caps and with a lot of exclamation points.

Which was a huge relief for me, having just last night ACCIDENTALLY KILLED MY LAPTOP!!!!

NOOOOO! UNDO, UNDO, UNDO!!

It was nice to know that not only was I allowed to panic, I was encouraged to do so—and had good company in the panicking. Mel and Melissa were admirably  supportive, launching into histrionics as I told my woeful tale of getting up off the couch (NO, not the COUCH!) and tripping on the cord (ANYTHING but THAT!!) and pulling the laptop onto the hard floor (THE FLOOR! OMG!). Needless to say, we laughed a lot throughout the day, which went a long way toward helping me deal with the loss of my five-year-old electronic sidekick.

And meanwhile, Associate Publisher Lally O’Mara McMahon restored my will to live by ordering a new trip-proof Mac for me.

OMG! OMG!! A NEW COMPUTER!! I CAN’T STAND IT!!!

mac-won't-start

Status report on Mel’s computer: all is well. But only after a weekend visit from the superlative Tim Nagy, Mac Guy (d.b.a Precision Mac, here in Santa Fe), who shook his head at the flukey nature of the ailment, then reinstalled the system software and called the next morning to check on the patient.

One good thing to come out of the technical difficulties Friday: I found this handy “tiny troubleshooting guide” online, put together by CreativeTechs. Am sending it to all my Mac people.
