Are You a Pizzaholic?

PizzaSliceMy mother-in-law has been visiting and we were all at a complete loss for what to make for dinner for the last night of her stay.

“PIZZA!” Athena and Etani shouted together.

“Pizza sounds good,” James and his mom agreed.

“I DO NOT WANT PIZZA!” Hesperus, 10, said “Pizza is, like, so boring. Pizza is stupid. I hate pizza.”

We ordered two extra large pizzas.

James ate a hundred pieces. Then for good measure he ate five more right before bed.

At 4:00 a.m. when the baby woke up to nurse, James was awake. And groaning.

“My stomach’s roiling and feels all hot,” he moaned. “I. Ate. Too. Much. Pizza.”

He had to get up anyway, to catch a 6:00 a.m. flight. His dad, who lives in upstate New York, is having surgery for throat cancer this Friday.

My kids are on Spring Break but Hesperus had a gymnastics handspring clinic that started at 9:00 a.m. Despite her adamant eye-rolling stance against dinner last night, she packed leftover pizza for a snack.

After she left, I made a grocery shopping list. I asked Athena and Etani what they wanted to eat this week.

“PIZZA!” they shouted in unison.

James’s first flight was cancelled because of the winter weather in Denver. But he managed to make it safely across the country.

He emailed during the lay-over in Philadelphia. “I just walked past a pizza place and had to restrain myself from getting a slice. ‘Oooh—pizza!’” He wrote. “I think I may be a pizzaholic.”

What’s your take on pizza? Do you love pizza as much as my husband and children do?! (Can you tell I don’t?) How often do you eat pizza? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comment section below.

It has dairy (cheese), vegetable/fruit (tomato sauce), grain (crust)…what’s not to love about pizza?

Jennifer, I just have to take this opportunity to go offtopic and tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I love it that you look at each new experience as an opportunity to learn and don’t present yourself as a “know it all” mom. You just seem like a genuine, likable woman with a lot of interesting things to say.

    • Thank you for your kind words Tracy! I’m definitely opinionated (and how) but I really try to be as open minded as I can, learn from other people (especially other moms and dads), and question my values and choices and how I am living my life. I’m glad I’m not coming across as a know-it-all! Thank you for commenting and for reading my blog!

My kids would eat pizza DAILY. And honestly, I love it too. We make ours, so I do make our crust more whole grain, and my pizza sauce is homemade from garden tomatoes. The only really negative I see is all the cheese, so I try to go easy on that.

I make the crust half whole wheat, and sneak in tofu cheese. I’m wondering how healthy I can make it before they will stop eating it. So far, it’s still pizza Friday every Friday at our house.

I have discovered that not all pizzas are equal. We have an excellent pizza parlor that makes unique combinations of ingredients, so much better than the pizzas from chain stores.

Also, I learned to make pizza, and it is really not hard at all. For a dish that is way beyond anything you can buy, start with an organic pizza dough mix. So very sweet! Yum!

I love pizza. I almost always want more. Once I ate seven pieces.

  6. Lori says:

I LOVE pizza, but cannot have it very often for I can eat definately a medium all by myself. Very sad.

  7. Deston says:

I’m with Lori – I’ll eat too much of it if left to my own devices. What I cannot abide is BAD pizza, nor do I want it for breakfast. My favorite is Old Town Pizza in Portland.

Pizza is the food of the God’s. Eat it. It gives you powers.

My 8-year-old son has never been crazy about pizza. I worry about that boy…

  10. Cindy L. says:

I agree with Nik — “food of the gods” !! My favorite part of ordering pizza (always vegetarian now) is eating it COLD in the morning! Yum.

  11. Pizza gets a bad rap sometimes, but it’s not as bad as other foods are, comparatively speaking. Sounds like everyone had a good time!

There’s only so much pizza I can handle, but I certainly can’t imagine life without it. I can’t have gluten and the most amazing find I’ve made in Denver is a delivery pizza place that has gluten-free crusts (and that are actually really tasty).

Pizza. This quick and generous response says it all. People love it. I do get that can’t-stop-once-I-start-one-more-slice thing, as well. I know I have had enough and am very full, yet, I always go for the third slice which never fails to give me insomnia or nightmares with indigestion. I think it’s the yeast. At any rate, I, myself, had to talk myself out of the pizza line at the airport on Thursday after having inhaled three slices on Wednesday night. Simply because I refused to pay California Pizza $9.95 for the round equivalent of a slice. Not because I was resisting the hair of the dog that bit me. It smelled sooo good. I still wish someone had the best pizza recipe ever. My mother’s. Oh, well, I could just keep sharing. I am Susan and I am a pizzaholic. As they say,”one’s too many and ten is not enough”

  14. Alisa Bowman says:

I don’t eat commercial pizza a lot because it’s addicting and makes me thirsty and feel like a balloon the next day. But I sometimes make it at home from scratch, and that’s a lot more satisfying. My husband eats a lot more pizza than I do, but he has lower food standards.

  15. Sheryl says:

I like pizza – but am very picky about what I’ll eat. It has to be whole wheat crust, not-too-salty cheese, a certain type of tomato sauce, on and on. Yes, I’m no fun except when I can find a place that can cater to all my pizza-needs (or make it myself!)

  16. The boyfriend and I are big pizza fans. In fact, we stopped at a pizza place for dinner, and we’ve made it together from scratch a few times.

  17. Kristen says:

We made pizza from scratch at my house on Thursday and my kids are still begging for the leftovers. It’s Spring Break here too, so pizza for breakfast? Sure. My kids each get to pick ingredients for their own pizzas. My oldest likes to experiment with cheeses–she added fontinella cheese to hers. So tasty. But we rarely, rarely buy pizza from pizza places–just tastes too bland.

When my husband and I (both native NYkers) go back to visit, we eat at least a slice a day. At least.

I know what you mean, it seems like everyone loves pizza! I really love pizza when Im extremely hungover and need a nice greasy coating on my stomach lining just to keep everything in order, that coupled with the fact that you barely have to pull yourself off the ground to pay the delivery dude makes pizza the perfect hangover breakfast!

The other thing pizza is great for is feeding indecisive groups because if people feel they are being given a choice of what to eat they are generally happier (even if its only a choice between cheese or cheese and olives…most people are pretty easy to trick) Besides those two scenarios I rarely ever find myself eating pizza.

nice article though, hope your father in law has a speedy recovery!
