Is it Too Late to Return to Breastfeeding on Demand?

Naomi Aldort

After reading your writings, I realize that I may have made a mistake in weaning my 2 year old son prematurely. I have been pretty firm about only letting him nurse in the morning. He is doing ok with it but still asks, usually when he is tired. I wanted to wean him originally because I felt like he was asking to nurse when he was bored. Something about it felt a little unhealthy. But now after reading your writings, I feel bad about weaning him and wonder if you think it will be too confusing to go back to nursing on demand? thank you..

Dear parent,

I don’t know how long your son has been weaned or if you still nurse him in the mornings. If he is still nursing in the morning, it will be wonderful for him and you to go back to full breastfeeding on his terms. If he is now fully weaned and not interested, then make peace with the path your chose and move on happily. If you can get raw milk for him, it would help in terms of nutrition. In terms of physical closeness with you, if he does not go back to breastfeeding, make sure to spend as much time cuddling with him

as you did when fully breastfeeding.

Hopefully what you meant is that he is still nursing in the morning. This would be easy and totally not confusing to him to allow him full access to breastfeeding. Enjoy.
