I want to use cloth but DH wants to use disposables when our next one is born. I just can't wait to put cloth on that little bum. With DS we waited until he was about 4 days old. I'm worried about meconium/stains. I have 2 x-small FB and 6 sm FB; 2 Kissaluvs (0), and 3 dozen infant prefolds/6 newborn proraps. We could bring a wet bag and wash right when we get home...but DH thinks we should use what is free in the hospital. What are your feelings?

i was afraid of the staining too. i was only in the hospital about 12 hours. roman was born at just shy of 1am and we left the hospital at noon the next day. He wore their sposies for that time and went home in his first cloth dipe

is up to you tho mama. some are very adament that their babe should never be in a sposie. I was ok with just that first day

Well, I am determined to use cloth, just b/c I've set this little goal of having a baby who has NEVER had a sposie on his bum, lol.

From almost everybody who has reported in here, the consensus seems to be that meconium is not the huge deal we think it is. In fact, there is a thread here about...oh darn...the baby's name is Anika, lol....her newborn dipes and she also says meconium was No Big Deal and she's glad she got lots of n/b fitteds.

If you are not going to be in hospital for long, I say go for it. You can, as you say, just bring a bag and take them home. I really think that it is YOUR decision as to whether to use cloth or not. You are the one going to birth the baby and be in the hospital and I think you get final say!

I'm going to be in for four days (C/S) but luckily my DH is totally on board with the cloth, and he has offered to take the dirty ones home each day, wash them, and bring them back (he is a SAHD right now, so he's an expert at CDing).

Oh, and of course the BIGGEST reason to use cloth in the hospital is the CONVERT factor. The nurses will be drooling over them, I'm sure!!

meconium comes out! don't worry about it. I would use cloth because it's much better for a brand new babe's skin and softer too.

we used cloth from day 1 with our son but he was born at home and (thankfully)no one was passing out free huggies! hehe.

We used the sposies in the hospital, I had spoke with the nurses beforehand, and they had told me that they do not carry cloth diapers, and if I wanted them Id have to supply my own. At the same time they said they are not responsible if they get lost (tossed in with hospital laundry) just teh same if we brought our own clothes. Because of that, and that I didnt have a big stash or the money to buy more just in case, and my hospital stay would be 3 days with the c-section, we opted for the sposies. It would of been too much for dh to be doing all the laundry etc, as well while I was out of the picture.

The hospital I was at provided prefolds, so I just used theirs when Simone was born - they had a little cart that they stocked with prefolds and disposables. Check with your hospital, perhaps? If they do the same, then all you'll need to bring is a few covers, and the hospital will do the prefold laundry!

We used cloth in the hospital with my fourth baby starting with the first diaper in the OR for my c-section baby. My dh took them home every day and washed them, bless him. We are still disposable-free at 4 weeks, 2 days.

No meconium staining either, not on flannel, fleece, hemp or prefolds! And we use wool soakers with a newborn! Just a little crazy here!

I have the same goal of only having this one in cloth from day one, minute one..
plus sposies arnt free..I beleive they are added into your bill.anywway here is my plan

I am taking 2 wetbags to the hosp
1 LARGE>.& 1 small..
I willmake sure all diapers are put into a wetbag...baby is not leaving my side..there will be no changing in the nursery etc..orother opurtunity for anything to get lost..

DH will come home & wash for me..& bring back clean ones..if Ineed them...as I think I am taking everything Iown! LOL

ok, as far as mec. stains..what I am doing is I got some knit fabric at Walmart..it was a remnant..I pd about .90 ?? I think...I cut them up into little tiny liners (got about 30 from that piece)..they dont add bulk this way & they are still soft against baby... you can even get old t-shirts & use those!

I wish I had started CDing at the hospital.

We were told that if we brought our own cloth there was a good chance it would get lost and I had all AIOs and didn't want to loose them. Our insurance paid 100% of the medical bills so the sposies didn't cost us personaly, but they do charge you. They will charge you for ANYTHING they use on you. For one tiny tylenol, bandaid, santary napkin, etc.

If you do use cloth (which I totally think you should if you have enough and you can do laundry etc.) I would only use prefolds or other diapers you wouldn't be heart broken if they got lost. Or make sure your DC is in a prefold when it is time for them to take them to the nursery.

Good luck!

P.S. We brought some baby night gowns that had the covers for the hands, I would highly reccomend those. My DS would leave for the nursery just fine but whe he got back he would have scratches ALL over his face.

We didn't lose any gowns while we were there. They won't let you use the baby mittons because they are a choking hazard... at least at our hospital thats how it was.

Yes yes yes..get lots of little gowns. My dd's both wore those all the time when they were tiny...We did sposies at the hospital because I WAS scared of staining, but I got over that when we got home...and now know I was just naive...To do over again I'd take a medium wetbag and my dipes and let it roll. The nurses are too busy showing all the other nurses your cute dipes to lose them and it's not like you are going to toss your precious diapers into the dirty towels on the floor to get taken to the dirty laundry anyhow. It is NO more difficult that sposies are there. Now I am speaking from having my baby in the room with me the ENTIRE time except when they give the first bath, so that was the only time a nurse diapered her.

I say you should do what's easiest for you.

I had brought cloth diapers with me to the hospital, but after having an unplanned C-section, I wasn't able to change my ds's diapers myself for the first couple days. DH and the nurses would change him and used the sposies the hospital provided. By the time I could go home, I changed him into a Kissaluv and he's been in cloth ever since.

BTW, merconium doesn't stain, but if you want to be safe, buy some cheap fleece from the craft store and cut out some liners. I did this for the first few weeks. It kept baby drier too!

Good luck to you!

We never wanted disposables on our baby. We went to a birth center instead of a hospital, so I can't really speak to whether or not the diapers might get lost. Maybe stick with the prefolds in the hospital? And make sure you have a system in place for taking care of them so they don't get mixed in w/ the hospital linens?

Our hospital policy was NO cloth on the baby. Now, Their reasoning, was sort of hygiene, but the fact that they would lose them as they are changed everytime that the baby leaves your site and they WOULD get tossed in with the sposies and that they DID NOT want to put a poopie dipaer back on the bassinet cart of a newborn. What if they got it wrong and put your poopy dipe on someone else's cart? I know I would freak finding someone elses poopy thing near my nb (not really, but I can only imagine it) and then the staff would all have to wear gloves all the time as there was "hazardous waste" on your cart, so even while bringing the little bundle down the hall to your room, etc.

And god forbid he/she ever end up in the NICU!

We used cloth on my 2 week old from the get go and I'm so glad we did. the meconium didn't stain at all but just required a few extra rinses before starting a wash cycle when we got home. I took a samll Bummis tote and it was perfect. I had about 10 nb fitteds and we used those without a cover and when they were gone we used preemie proraps with a snappi and no cover. They pee and poop so little the first few days it wasn't a problem. Some of the nurses gave us bad looks but I couldn't stand the thought of a scratchy disposable in my precious newborn even for a few minutes. It really is easy, I say go for it!
