Get rid of Toys?

Naomi Aldort

I have come to understand that having too many toys is a bad idea. The problem is, we already have them. We have issues with sharing and my 4 year old wanting 'more'. I would like to get rid of some of the toys, but of course my son does not want to part with things. I have tried putting things away and waiting a few months to see if he misses it before getting rid of it. I have started to get rid of my excess things because I too have too many. I am throwing away toy catalogues before he sees them and avoiding stores as much as possible. What else would you suggest to make a transition to be less focused on 'things'?

Dear Parent,

You are already taking productive actions to reduce your children’s dependency on toys. You need not take anything away from the child that he currently wants and plays with. He will lose interest at some point and that would be the kind time to clean things up. Of course, cleaning up your own clutter is a must.

Most importantly, offer experiences that do not depend on material goods. Take your children to enjoy nature, hiking, boating, swimming, outdoor cultural events, dancing, the zoo, concerts, the beach and being with people. Give them the experiences that focus on being and relating, rather than on things.

Warmly, Naomi Aldort, http://authenticparent.com
