Badger Cheerful Mind Balm, plus Holiday Natterings

December 18th, 2009

If ever a product’s debut was seasonally appropriate for certain people who feel under-endowed in the holiday spirit department, Badger’s Cheerful Mind Balm is it. Made of sweet orange, lemon, rosemary, spearmint, neroli, ylang ylang, and cinnamon essential oils, it’s meant to be massaged into the temples, hands, forehead “or anywhere you need a little soothing.”

I tend toward being one of those people. I miss the absolute magic of believing in Santa Claus. I miss feeling abundantly blissed out by the gifts that appeared under the tree. I miss believing it was Santa when my dad went downstairs to “catch Santa on his way up the chimney,” and not my dad saying “ho, ho, ho.”

But. I realized yesterday that I do like the holiday season–as a season, not a high-speed log flume ride that dumps us right into an explosion of THE HOLIDAY CLIMAX. Of course that feels overwhelming, and then anticlimactic.

This year, I’m doing the 12 days of Christmas with the kids. Each morning, they get something to play with–usually something they share. It has been so low-key, lovely and delightful. It’s even been nice to wake up at 5:30am (when they pop out of bed)–because we have more time to enjoy the morning.

It even worked that way when we decided to decorate the tree. Instead of it being a micromanaged, overly pressured/precious event, we took out the tree, started to set it up, and then went to a birthday party. We came back, and I had a bad stomach flu that lasted for a good 16 hours, so I let the kids put ornaments on themselves. Um, yeah. They LOVED it. And I was flat on my back in bed, the weight of the sickness smothering my gross Martha Stewart overly-controlling Christmas-tree-decorating shadow side. I noticed that it was a relief to let go of that. Big time.

So, decorating the tree took about four or five days. It was slow, and thoughtful, and had this great organic energy–Nathaniel decided to put the soccer-playing Santa near another ornament who seemed prime to receive his pass, and made other relationships between the ornaments, too. Overhearing his spoken thought process while he did this was priceless.

I’m dreaming of a non-neurotic Christmas…sans mantles of old baggage, acquired expectations, and general bah humbuggery. Amen to things shifting…even when we only have a mustard-seed’s sized amount of optimism and hope that they will. That’s all it takes.

It’s an Insty Staffer Review by Simone Snyder: the GlamourMom Maternity/Nursing Top.

December 8th, 2009
Simone in the GlamourMom Nursing Shirt Extraordinaire. Her baby "digs it," too.

I hear it from my mother all the time: “You are so lucky…when I had you thirty years ago…” and then she goes on about how maternity and nursing clothes were not readily available to her back then; or if they were they were not all that flattering. I suppose she is right. We do have quite a selection these days, but now it seems like there’s too much. It can be a daunting task to rummage through all of the catalogs and all of the websites, and quite frankly, with a nursing baby, who has the time?

I recently tried out the new Long Sleeve Maternity Top in Heather Berry from GlamourMom. It starts out as a nice, stretchy maternity top and then goes on to be a form-fitting nursing top. Added value. I was quite impressed. I usually sport my regular clothes and find creative ways to nurse in public but I think I may have been won over by the convenience of my new find. The shirt itself does not scream–or even whisper– “I am a nursing top.” It could pass as a regular shirt. Underneath the outer layer is a built in and removable bra (two items for the price of one) that unhooks quite conveniently at the strap. Had I realized how supportive the built-in bra was I probably would not be sitting here right now struggling with the sensations associated with wearing two bras. Next time I’ll give it a whirl on its own. I like the color, I like the feel, and yes, in this cold weather, it feels cozier and less drafty than pulling up my shirt.

Simone Snyder is the Product Fulfillment Manager/Street Teams Coordinator at Mothering Magazine. She’s a certified doula, childbirth educator, and a licensed massage therapist specializing in prenatal and postpartum massage.

Abba rewrite for Mothering: Nursing Queen

December 7th, 2009

Y’all, I am so excited. Our Mothering holiday staff dinner is next Tuesday evening and I am going to rewrite the lyrics to Abba’s Dancing Queen to be a Mothering-themed song! Melissa Chianta (who in addition to being a supremely thorough managing editor, has a killer set of pipes) has agreed to lead the tune , and I basically just want to drop all of my various duties and write it up.

Right now I’m pretty sure that the chorus will feature lines ending in “Mothering/breastfeeding/nursing queen…” plus some kind of play on the ending sound of “vaccine,” and “magazine”…it’s just begging to be written. Feel free to post verses! I hope to put up a video clip after the fact…and for next year, we are kicking around the idea of choreographing a song, with costumes. Yes, Virginia, I have been watching too much Glee.
