Child Returns from Dad's Clingy

Naomi Aldort

when my 3 year old returns home from his father's after being gone for 4 days . he starts to cry for anything, he does not want to sleep alone, as he always has, he crys for me whenever i leave the room, he does not want to be alone. he does not want to eat. sometimes he hits me, and he will not listen to me. the normal pretty well behaved child that he is before leaving to dad's house, comes back totally different. please advice.

Dear divorced mother,

Your child is clinging to you because he is traumatized by being without you for so long. When at his father’s, he was sure you were gone forever. He wants to be sure that you don’t vanish ever again. Listen to your child, he knows best what he needs.

Therefore, my first recommendation is for the child to see his father during the days only; no overnights. Even then, I recommend that your child always sleeps with you. He needs it badly, specially now. He is afraid to lose you. He needs to have his fear alleviated by your uninterrupted presence.

Warmly, Naomi Aldort, http://authenticparent.com/index.html
